GIRL'S SEWING CIRCLE

1905-1910

On october 14 1905, a meeting was held at the Parsonage to form a Girl's Sewing Circle under the leadership of Mrs. Brewer. It was decided to meet every other Saturday at half-past two P.M.

The activities seemed to consist of meetings at which the members worked on handicraft and needlework items. Sales were organized as well as social events; the profits to be used for the upkeep of the church.

In 1907, a table cover sold for 35 cents, a dolly for 20 cents and a napkin ring for 10 cents. Fees of 2 cents were collected at the meetings; however in 1910, the fee was raised to 10 cents, tea included.

A sale was held on Mrs. J.E. Standish's lawn on August 8th 1908, at which a profit of $33.50 was realized from sales of needlework, ice-cream and candy.

In 1909, the Girl's Sewing Circle had a balance in the Eastern Township's Bank of Marieville of $101.05 and decided to purchase a new organ for St.Thomas' Church. The new organ chosen cost $225.00 but was reduced to $175.00. Mr. Willis donated twenty five dollars, leaving a sum to be collected from the parishioners. The old organ was sold for $20.00.

On August 29th 1910, a business meeting was called to discontinue the meetings of the circle to some future date and to dispose of the remaining needlework articles.
