SUNDAY SCHOOL

Sunday School seems to have been a preoccupation for the founders of St.Thomas' Anglican Church. In the first recorded proceedings, it was mentioned that the four seats nearest the Communion table be reserved for the Sunday School.

The next mention of Sunday School was in 1879, when the assistant Rev. A. Lee was to take personal charge of the Sunday School.

In 1904, Rev. Abbott wrote that: " The Rougemont Sunday School is small; but all children old enough to attend did so. The chief objection to efficient Sunday School work was the difficulty of securing teachers with adequate information and teaching power; the children, upon the whole, wer very intelligent."

In 1921, Captain Crawford was Sunday School superintendent.

The names of the Sunday School teachers were not always mentioned in the annual meetings. Some of the people who contributed to the teaching of the Sunday School were:

1940's: Mrs. Sylvester Carden
1948: Vera Standish
1950's Grace Bachelder
1958: Jessie Standish
1960: Patricia Midlane
1964: John Standish
1968: Nancy Wardlaw

In 1960, repairs wer carried out to the upper room at the back of the church to be used as a Sunday School room. The stairs to the belfry were replaced by a folding stairway. For a number of years at that period, the Sunday School was active, holding picnics and going carol singing at Christmas.

In 1988 , repairs were done to the plaster and painting was done with the help of Ian Matheson, Carol Standish, Carol McArthur and Rachel Standish.

In 1990, Rachel Standish is teaching an average of five young children.
