The instructions 'turn slow' are needed for some long tunes.

All the tunes are set within the limits of one revolution. As some tunes are longer than others, a crochet staple will therefore be much longer on the barrel for the time value of the shorter tunes.

For the longer ones, the operator must keep pum, ping with his right foot, but must stop turning the crank after the first chord is pegged to give the reciting note its full length.

Instructions are given for manipulating the stops as well as a set of rules as to how to play the organ.

These rules are quoted as written in the letter: Rev. Pugh believed that no other copies remained because of the fast disappearance of barrel organs.
