EARLY ENGLISH FAMILIES
STANDISH:
Two brothers, Matthew and Robert Standish with their families came from Ireland to
settle in Rougemont in 1818. The rapid population increase and the difficult economic
conditions of Ireland seemed to be some of the factors influencing the choice of families
to emigrate to Canada.
It has been said that these families chose to establish their homes on the slopes of the
mountain at Rougemont as the landscape of the hills closely resembled their home country.
Matthew Standish and his wife, Rebecca Stanley came to Canada with six children; Susanna,
Anne, John , Robert, Matthew, and Joseph.Four other children were born at Rougemont;
William, Richard, Rebecca and James. Matthew Standish purchased farm land, now Lot 558,
East Side, Double Range, in the Seigniory of Debartzch (Rougemont) on Nov. 25th,
1819.
Robert Standish and his wife, Jane Benn came to Canada with six children: Susannah, John,
Phoebe, Priscilla, Jane and Francis. Three other children wer born in Rougemont; Tryphena,
Robert and Eleanor. On october 15th 1818, Robert Standish purchased a farm, now
Lot 551, East Side, Double Range, in the Seigniory of Debartzch from Zera Beebe for
"575 piastres d'Espagne".
The brothers exchanged farms in 1824.
In Ireland, the standish brothers were among the most prominent and active layman of the
Church of Ireland (Anglican).
CARDEN:
At approximately the same time as the two Standish brothers settled in the Seigniory of
Debartzch, Rouville County Quebec, William Carden, a native of Ireland and his wife Eliza
settled in the same district. William Carden was a Major in the British Army and was the
firdt mayor of St.Cesaire.
The Carden and Standish families came from the same area in Ireland, Queen's County and it
is believed that the families knew each other before coming to Canada. John, son of
William Carden married Phoebe, the daughter of Robert Standish on July 28th 1830.
Some of the Standish and carden families in Ireland came from a Huguenot background. |
