FIRST RECORDED PROCEEDINGS

The first recorded history available of St.Thomas' Anglican Church is a report of a meeting of the inhabitants of Rougemont, members of the church of England, on Tuesday the 19th day of september 1848.

Because of the importance of this meeting, the text is reproduced in its entirety:

After prayer by the Rev.d F. Robinson the minister appointed to the mission of the seigneury of Rougemont, by license and authority of the Right Reverend George, Ichosophat by divine permission, Lord Bishop of Montreal bearing date the 6th day of July 1848.

The Reverend gentleman addressed the persons assembled and informed them that by the terms of the Provincial Parliament of the 6th Victoria ( commonly called the church temporalities act) Cap.3, Section 3, the power of electing church wardens could for the present reside only in himself; as the inhabitants not having yet become pewholders according to the provisions of the 2nd yet become pewholders according to the provisions of the 2nd section of the said act, were not in a condition lawfully to elect one or either of the same, and that he should therefore nominate and appoint Mr. John R. Standish and Mr. Sias Batchelder churchwardens for the current year, and they were there upon nominated and appointed accordingly.

Mr. John Standish and Mr. Sias Batchelder having accepted the office of Churcwardens for the current year, Mr. Sias Batchelder was called to the chair.
